Why 22 Colors
Most of the scenes in this book are old. Not “designed last year” old – I mean fifteen years sitting in a drawer, unseen, going nowhere. I made them for myself, saved them, and then life moved on.
When I finally decided to put together a book, I went back to those files. The palette was already there – 22 colors, chosen intuitively at the time, not as a product decision but just because that’s what the images needed. I refined the designs, cleaned things up, made them work properly on paper. But the colors stayed. They were part of what the pictures already were.
The later books use 27. That came from experience – more scenes, more variety, more room to work with. But 22 turned out to be enough for everything in this one. Nothing feels missing.
How the Grid Works
Every page in this book uses the same 45×60 grid. For a Letter-format page that’s a deliberate middle ground – cells are large enough to read the numbers and letters without squinting, and the resolution is enough that the finished image actually looks like something. Objects are recognizable, scenes have shape and detail. It’s not minimalist pixel art where you’re left guessing – but it’s also not so fine that it becomes tiring.
The consistency helps too. Every page is the same size, so once you’ve done one, you know roughly what to expect from any other.
